The Tree Lighting Finale!!

The lighting of the "Town" Christmas Tree was Thursday evening.  Unfortunately, I could not be there for the celebration, so these are photos taken by my friends.

It is so wonderful that the town came together for this spontaneous project.  I hope you enjoy the photos and the sentiment of this community project as much as I do!

Happy Holidays, One and All!!

A Special Christmas Tree

Years ago, in my small town on Cape Cod, a man created a beautiful Christmas Tree made from buoys.  It was in his front yard for everyone to enjoy.

Sadly, he passed away this year, and the tree went into disrepair.  Upon learning of this, the town's people rallied, with a small group leading the charge.  A call went out for used buoys, and people donated loads of them.

Volunteers cleaned the buoys and painted them.

They got a permit to display the new tree on the Town Green.  Yesterday, the frame was delivered, and they assembled the new tree.

Watching this all unfold was so heartwarming.  It seems to exemplify the holiday spirit.

Tonight, the tree will be lit as a town-wide event.  Part 2 of this post will feature those photos.

ETA:  Here's the backstory of the original tree and the new one:
For those that don’t know the back story of this tree, it was created by Jimmy Filliman, a native Cape Codder who’s family many of us grew up with. The pieces were all found objects that Jimmy collected as he walked the beaches & and used to build assorted treasures including this phenomenal buoy tree. It was estimated at consisting of 200+ buoys, that he individually hand tied to a beautiful piece of driftwood for the trunk. It was a wonderful, beautiful, and creative way to recycle and reuse items to make this gorgeous and TRUE Cape Cod Christmas Tree. Jimmy passed away tragically this past Spring due to complications of diabetes & I’m helping to coordinate this community project to rebuild as similar a model as we can do justice on the town green in Eastham as a memorial to him, and for his family this holiday season.

Getting Into The Holiday Spririt

This year many of us are having a difficult time getting into the holiday spirit.  I'm putting one foot in front of the other, and doing what feels comfortable.  We put up our tree yesterday and trimmed it with all of our decorations.  You can see we need a new tree-topper-- the angel's lights finally blew out after 20 years!

I enjoy looking at each ornament and remembering where they came from or who made them.  I picked up this fun pair this afternoon.  Maybe they're a happy sign about our upcoming family vacation!

These two boxes contain vintage ornament which we found in my parents' attic during the cleanout.  This was my share of them!  I'm going to put these on now, but I may need a bigger tree!

I hope anyone struggling this holiday season takes time for themselves, and just do what you're up for.  Remember, even in "normal" years, the holidays can be hard enough.  We'll get by with a little help from our WTIOC friends.

Happy Weekend!!

Good morning, friends!  Pull up a chair and let me get you a cappuccino.

We're getting our Christmas tree today.  I can't wait!

What do you have planned for the weekend?

****  To everyone who has not sent Regina your handwriting samples, please do it soon, the more the merrier, this will be fun! 😉 The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog, both in cursive and print. ****
