Big Game Tonight

Today's post is in honor of our dear friend Pallottine. He is super excited about this game between Notre Dame's Fighting Irish and the Michigan Wolverines.

I am sure that Pallottine must be cheering for Michigan.  Guess what? We will all be cheering for them!!
                               GO BLUE!!

Michigan taught the game to Notre Dame back in 1887. Michigan trounced Notre Dame by a combined score of 121-16 through the first 8 meetings. But finally in 1909 Notre Dame won by a score of 11-3. Michigan leads the all-time series 24–17–1.
These guys sure look a lot smaller than today's players!

Pallottine-- I bet you remember this game!

I thought he might like to go to the game...so I got him a ticket.
If you guys wouldn't mind chipping in... it was $1595. (2074.86 CAD!!) Nothing is too good for P.

Kick-off is 7:30 tonight.  Coach Harbaugh announced that his junior quarterback Shea Patterson will be starting for the Wolverines.

GO...
Hold on a minute... We are always shouting "Go Blue" here at WTIOC, but where the heck does that come from?  Here's a bit of a history lesson:

History does not paint a clear, definite picture of how "Go Blue" became the rallying cry of University of Michigan Wolverines. U-M alum Bob Neir says the term was coined in the 1950s, when he and his friend and fellow Wolverine Paul Fromm attended a varsity hockey game. Neir recalled Fromm standing up and shouting "Go Blue!" At first, the other hockey game guests looked and laughed, but then eventually joined in chanting the now legendary two-word phrase of pride. But in another version of history, in a 1998 letter to Michigan Today, Ann Arbor native Margaret "Peg" Detlor Dungan wrote that Fromm first said "Go Blue" at the home football opener against Michigan State in the fall of 1950. In another 1998 letter to Michigan Today, Charles J. Moss of Midland claimed to have invented and introduced the "Go Blue" cheer at a U-M baseball game in the spring of 1947. He says the cheer was picked up at Michigan football games the following fall, and thus was history made.

This post is the combined effort of Q and GJ!

Time for the weekend

What a week we had here at WTIOC. It started out stressful but improved as each day went along. We are happy to hear Mike is home and recovering nicely. 1SC can cuddle beautiful baby Todd to her heart's content, he will certainly not lack for hugs with so much love surrounding him. Overall, it turned out to be a very good week. Now we can enjoy the weekend! 😊

Rainy Thursday!!

It is a bleak, cool, rainy morning.

I thought you might enjoy these nice shots my daughter took on her walk with Sweet Pea yesterday.

.
And a couple of nights ago...

We are all thinking of 1SC and little Todd today. She is doing what mothers and grandmothers always do... protecting their babies. We send love and strength to see them through.

Things to ponder

How come you press harder on the remote when you know the battery is dead?

Why does sour cream have an expiration date?

Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard?

If a turtle doesn't have a shell, is he homeless or naked?

Why is it,when a door is open it's ajar, but when a jar is open, it's not adoor?

Do fish get cramps after eating?

Just some things to think about.. Have a great day!

Happy Monday?

Happy Monday, Friends.

Some of us have a hard time greeting the start of a week with a smile...

And some of us greet the new week with gusto...

No matter how you feel about the start of the week, the one thing we all have in common is looking forward to Friday!!

Happy Monday, All!!

Beautiful days ahead

Q's post about Dahlias made me think about fall. It is my favorite time of year. I love the warm days followed by brisk evenings... Sweatshirt weather! I like to enjoy the fall colors with leaves crunching under my feet. Duncan has so much more energy once it cools down; we love going on walks together.

Then there are the tastes and smells of fall. Local apples are abundant, pumpkin spice goodies are everywhere, and there is often the hint of a bonfire in the air. Football is in full swing.

GO BLUE!

Autumn will be here before we know it. I can't wait. 😊

Dahlias

I was googling "late-summer flowers" to get inspiration for my garden, and came across these beautiful photos of dahlias.  I've never grown them because they intimidate me for some reason.  I love the depth of the colors and the texture and geometry of each blossom.  Does anyone have dahlias in their garden?

What's your favorite late-summer flower or plant?

Eastham Public Library

Two years ago, my little Cape Cod town opened their new library.  It took a very long time to get the library built. The biggest hurdle was the cost, though other obstacles included the library committee's firing the first project team after their design had been finalized, citizens' being outraged by the size and modern design of the chosen building.

This is a photo from 1905 of the original library, which opened in 1897.  Over the years, additions were added, but it was much too small for the current population.

The new library opened in November 2016, and is extremely well-loved by most everyone in town. Though it is much bigger than the old building, and was very expensive, the library is now so much more than just a library, it's used as a community center, hosting many local events, which the old building could not accommodate. It has also won many architectural awards for design and LEED designation (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, in other words, it is a Green Building).

I spent a few afternoon there this summer and can attest that it is spectacular.  The reading areas in the back overlook a beautiful pond (one of the cleanest ones in town and a heavenly spot for a swim).  While I was there, a number of people walked around looking at the impressive interior and views, while taking photos and talking about how wonderful the library was.

Here are some photos of the library, the entry and two of the reading rooms.

It's pretty nice, don't you think?
